The life of a Mayan woman who was born to be a midwife shows how people contribute to and are shaped by their cultural communities. Across this midwife's lifetime, her town has changed dramatically and at the same time has maintained Mayan ways that have been used for centuries. Barbara Rogoff describes these themes using rare photos and films from 1941 to the present. They are also presented in her new book, "Developing Destinies" (Oxford University Press, 2011). Proceeds from the book support a learning center in the Mayan town. **To hear a radio interview about the book:
