Film on Weber State Campus:
1. Hello, my name is Abigail Smith. My friends and family call me Abbie. I am applying for the Doctor of Nursing Practice - Family Nurse Practitioner program here at Weber State University. A fun fact for you to remember me by is that I am 6 foot 3 inches tall. 😊
I am applying to WSU’s DNP Program because of its great reputation for a curriculum focusing on advanced nursing practice and healthcare system leadership. The DNP degree is highly competitive, and I am eager to learn to be a leader in the nursing profession. I realize the WSU program requires rigorous training, critical thinking, and the ability to identify problems and develop innovative solutions.
2. I look forward to this training and recognize that it will help me as I lead quality improvement initiatives that will improve patient safety, process efficiency, and equity. This program will allow me to learn patient assessments and reasoning skills and develop appropriate patient interventions for health and wellness.
I am currently attending Maryville University’s DNP program, but I am looking forward to transferring to Weber’s program for the previously listed reasons.
3. Three personal strengths that I will bring with me to Weber include resilience, leadership, and passion.
Resilience is a fundamental attribute while working in healthcare. The healthcare world is fast-paced and requires a quick thinker who can bounce back. Throughout my experiences as a nurse, I have encountered various challenges, which have fueled my determination to succeed. Resilience is not just about bouncing back from setbacks but learning and growing stronger. This strength enables me to be successful in academic pursuits and continuous improvement.
I lead by example and have had many leadership opportunities throughout my life. I use leadership to implement positive and influential changes in patient care. Effective leadership is essential in a dynamic field such as nursing. Using my leadership abilities, I foster teamwork and collaboration and am excited to bring these attributes to WSU.
I have always had a passion for life and my goals. I strive to become better and to learn new things. I am never afraid to ask questions or be taught. I am passionate about learning and consistently have a positive attitude about progressive changes. I became a nurse because I am passionate about being a lifelong learner. I am very passionate about helping others and love finding ways to improve life for those around me.
I will bring these strengths, among many others, to Weber State. I am motivated to seek the DNP degree because it will allow me to have a more substantial positive effect on my patient's lives socially, psychologically, and physically. I want to lead in preventative, quality, patient-centered, innovative, and equitable care.
4. Completing the DNP degree will enhance my professional career by increasing my knowledge of health, well-being, leadership, and population health while also increasing my scope of practice. Currently, there is a shortage of primary care providers. Locally, I will make a difference by being an additional practitioner who is quality and equity-focused, helping my patients achieve their health goals and addressing local social determinants of health. Nationally, I want to make a difference by advocating for every patient to have a primary care provider. I saw the risks of not having a PCP while working as a travel nurse in Indiana. A primary care provider can see a patient's overall care and be the middleman between all specialists. Globally, I plan to make a difference by participating in international outreach programs. One of the reasons I want to become a DNP is so that I will be able to travel to third-world countries and provide education on updated health practices and quality standards. I know many barriers, such as cultural norms, lack of resources, and fear of foreigners, can be overcome through compassion and education. If people understand the why behind health practices, they can make the necessary changes to improve their health.
While in my first semester of NP school at Maryville University, I completed a community education project, shown here. A visual of the Health Belief Model. During this project, it became apparent that people can only make real change when they are psychologically ready. I want to help people become prepared for change and help them understand the why behind different health practices and the needed changes that will benefit their health.
In conclusion, my strengths of resilience, leadership, and passion are integral components of who I am. I am excited to bring these strengths, experience, and confidence to Weber State University’s DNP program. Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to the opportunity to further discuss how I can contribute to the WSU community.
